Health Spending Account
Some health costs—like prescriptions, dental, and vision—aren’t covered by provincial healthcare and can add up fast.
A Health Spending Account (HSA) lets employers give employees funds to cover these costs.
Business owners can also use it to pay for their own and their family’s health expenses through the company, saving on taxes.
How It Works
Annual Benefit Dollars – Employers set the yearly amount.
Employee Choice – Employees decide how to use their funds.
CRA-Approved – Covers eligible medical expenses like:
Prescription drugs
Dental care
Vision & glasses
Chiropractor & massage therapy
Hospital bills
Tax Advantages
For Employers – 100% tax-deductible as a business expense.
For Employees – Reimbursements are tax-free (not added to income).
Example:
Without an HSA: A $1,000 dental bill = employee must earn $1,400 before tax (assuming 30% tax) to pay it.
With an HSA: The company pays $1,000 directly through the HSA — no tax, no extra cost for the employee.
